Very few instructors see the importance of the invisble skills and even fewer have a methodology for teaching them. That is where our experience as coaches, and more importantly as competitive players, sets us apart. When we play, we want to shoot the best scores we possibly can each and every time we tee it up, and our mission, is to help you do the same. Our experience has taught us that ultimately golf is a game of personal strategy, on course execution, and resilience. How well you fare in these areas has a much more direct impact on your scorecard then what your swing video or trackman numbers looks like.
"I have observed in my lifetime commitment to this game, that all players, even the best in the world, can make better decisions. Understanding and accepting your golfing identity, knowing the dictates of the course, and then optimizing risk, are the keys to the decision making process. If you really want to play better golf, start with this INVISIBLE SKILL. Learn how to create your "clear shot intention." Picking the right shot more often is a small investment that pays big dividends."
"The difference-maker at the end of the week is not how good a player's swing is, but how well a player mananges the interference, and deals with the setbacks that are part of the competitive environment. Once I realized that this was the game's true challenge, I started to focus on the INVISBLE SKILLS. Immediately I went from battling to keep my card every year, to being a tour winner and a consistent top 50 performer. Thirty years ago I learned that the best players in the world don't put their trust in their swings, they put their trust in their pre and post-shot routines."
"I continue to be reminded daily that most of my students think the #1 cause of poor play is their technique. "I continue to be reminded daily that most of my students think the #1 cause of poor play is their technique. My guiding principle as a coach is not to ignore this type of thinking but to first create awareness of the many mental and physical roadblocks that are ever present in the playing environment and then bring those roadblocks to the practice tee. The first step to mastering the invisble skills is to make them visible on the practice tee. When awareness is heightened and discoveries are made during practice, then focus on how to swing can be redirected to focus on how to play, and enlightenment ensues."
Working on the INVISIBLE SKILLS isn't hard, but it is a different approach from what you are used to. You may even find it a bit uncomfortable at first, self introspection in my experience is rarely pleasant. But as Mr. Penick famously once asked his best student, "How's comfortable working for you?"
